Hospital a joint winner in Melbourne Awards

The Royal Victorian Eye & Ear Hospital is delighted to announce that its contribution to hearing research has been honoured in the 2006 Melbourne Awards.

The Hospital is a member of the East Melbourne Hearing Precinct, which won the Community Organisation award for establishing Melbourne as the centre for excellence in the area of hearing research. The Precinct’s other members include the Department of Otolaryngology and School of Audiology at the University of Melbourne, The Bionic Ear Institute, CRC Hear and Cochlear Limited Melbourne.

Hospital Chief Executive Officer Graeme Houghton said the award recognised the important research endeavours of the Precinct and the positive impact it has had on the lives of people with hearing loss.

“An example of the Precinct’s impact is the Bionic Ear, which has brought hearing to 75,000 people worldwide,” Mr Houghton said.

“Since this ground-breaking device was developed by the University of Melbourne in the 1960’s, all of the Precinct’s members have tirelessly worked to enhance it and we will continue to do so.”

Mr Houghton said specialists from around the world travel to East Melbourne to learn from the expertise offered by the hearing researchers, surgeons, audiologists and engineers that work within the Precinct.

“For nearly 40 years there has been a strong culture of collaboration between the Precinct’s members and our vision is to work together to improve the quality of life of Victorians for years to come.”

The Melbourne Awards are presented annually to recognise and celebrate the contributions made by Melbourne’s individuals, community organisations and corporations. The awards were presented at a gala ceremony at Melbourne Town Hall.
