Hospital hosts Patron’s visit

 The Royal Victorian Eye & Ear Hospital is pleased to announce the appointment of its new Patron, Mrs Jan de Kretser.

Mrs de Kretser recently accepted an invitation from the Hospital to be Patron during her husband’s term of office as Governor of Victoria.

Professor Graeme Ryan AC, Chair of the Hospital’s Board of Directors, said the Hospital was delighted by Mrs de Kretser’s acceptance. “Mrs de Kretser’s patronage provides a morale boost to Hospital staff and enhances the profile of the Eye & Ear, and its important work, in the Victorian community,” Prof Ryan said.

As part of her patronage, Mrs Kretser and the Governor of Victoria, Professor David de Kretser AC, undertook a visit the Hospital, which included a tour of several Hospital departments to showcase a small sample of the Eye & Ear’s work with hearing and vision impaired Victorians. The tour included:

  • The Cochlear Implant Clinic, which assists hearing-impaired children and adults develop hearing and speech using the Bionic Ear;
  • The Vitreo-Retinal Unit, which specialises in conditions and surgery in relation to the retina;
  • The Medical Photographic Imaging Centre, which assists the diagnosis and treatment of patients through imaging technology and;
  • The Day Surgery Unit, which incorporates three operating theatres.

This was followed by a morning tea with patients, donors, community partners, Hospital Community Advisory Committee members and staff.

During the morning tea Prof Ryan, thanked Mrs de Kretser and the Governor for making time to visit the Hospital and discussed the Hospital’s plans for redevelopment.

Mrs de Kretser, who practised and taught Occupational Therapy for many years, said she was impressed by the work of the Hospital and amazed at the advances in the delivery of healthcare that enabled patients to regain their sight and hearing so quickly.

Mrs de Kretser said she hoped the State Government would look favourably upon the Hospital’s redevelopment plans.

Hospital patient Kate Doyle, who received treatment at the Eye & Ear for diabetic retinopathy, presented Mrs de Kretser with a floral tribute in honour of her visit.
