PRACTICAL OPHTHALMOLOGY
A Survival Guide for Doctors and Optometrists
by Anthony Pane & Peter Simcock

ISBN: 0443101124

Reviewed by Pathmanathan Pathmaraj in 2005

Written by Anthony Pane, Brisbane-based Ophthalmologist and Peter Simcock, UK Ophthalmologist. This book is written for General Practitioners, junior Ophthalmic Residents, Optometrists and Orthoptists.
The chapters are organised in a presenting-symptom format, rather than disease. It guides the reader towards the diagnosis and management of the condition including indicating whether a referral to an Ophthalmologist is required.
Practical Ophthalmology has very good diagnostic flow charts for ophthalmic disease and conditions. It also has tips in examining children, which should be useful for general Ophthalmologists. The chapters that may be the most useful in examining children are Abnormal appearance of the eye or eyelids, Turned Eye/double vision and Watery, itchy or gritty eyes.
This book also contains "Critical Points" tables on particular topics/conditions, such as how to examine an eye patient, visual loss, Red eye and Eye trauma. These tables highlight the important management issues of the condition and are useful in preventing missing an important diagnosis.
Practical Ophthalmology is also especially useful for the Ophthalmologist who is involved in teaching Medical students, Optometrists or General Practitioners, as important points that are provided, should be highlighted in their teachings.
In summary, it is an excellent practical and accessible guide to a wide variety of readers who are involved in seeing eye patients.
