As its foreword intimates, this household name is struggling to maintain its currency in an environment with information increasingly available electronically. The Merck manual, in its 3,000-odd pages, endeavours to concisely summarise the most common conditions encountered in most fields of medicine. Some sections more briefly outline a clinical perspective: for example, the section on blepharitis mentions topical corticosteroids and punctal occlusion before "additional treatment" such as lid hygiene. The Merck Manual will perhaps continue to be most used by non-medical people and allied health professionals and internet wary GPs.
