Atlas of ophthalmic trauma

This book gives a good cover of the subject material.

Chapters consist of:

  1. Introduction to ocular trauma
  2. The ruptured glove
  3. Anterior segment injuries: blunt ocular trauma - What happens when the eye is struck by a blunt object?
  4. Thermal and caustic ocular trauma
  5. Posterior segment trauma
  6. Eyelid and lacrimal trauma
  7. Neuro-ophthalmologic manifestations of cranial and ocular trauma
  8. Penetrating orbital injuries
  9. The inflamed orbit
  10. Orbital fractures
  11. Management of traumatic optic neuropathy
  12. Appendix: Ophthalmologic emergencies
  13. Index.

As this is an atlas, the illustrations are of very high standard and complement the text nicely. It has some extremely good hints for examination and also covers management of the conditions adequately.

I find the claim that scleral ruptures occur in 25% of patients with traumatic hyphaema to be controversial and not borne out by local experience (in a study by L.P. Fong).
The statement dysthyroid orbitopathy is characteristically associated with enlarged muscle's tendons (caption to fig. 9.25) is clearly an error.

Other minor typographical errors do not detract from the value of the book which should find a place in any casualty department that deals with ophthalmic trauma.
It is also sufficiently detailed to be a good basis for ophthalmic trainees.
